443 Along the oceanside avenue, the gentle incline gives way to a more dramatic rise in elevation. From this part of Upper Mission street one has a commanding view of the towering cliffs to the north. An interesting little shop wraps itself around the trunk of an enormous ironwood tree, just this side of a large open field.

447 Old women with bundles and buckets labor up the hill toward the dwellings that lie below the cliff face. Row upon row, these makeshift shelters taunt the ocean into challenging their worthiness. The sweeping vistas here simply take the breath away, and many find the cares of the day diminished by the awesome power and beauty of the ocean.

451 As the incline steepens further, solid granite cliffs loom larger than life just beyond the northern fenceline. Removed from the rotting stench of the streets below, the breezes here are fresh and futures seem bright. A stone wall provides a nice place to rest and enjoy the magnificent view. 455 A pair of benches flank the white-tiled hallway that feeds patients into and out of the tidy clinic. A stringent odor fills the air and triggers painful memories of other visits to similar places and the associated pain (and expense). The few people waiting on the benches seem indisposed to chat, some being busy bleeding all over the tile floor or engaged in other matters of a similarly upsetting nature.

459 Moans, groans, screams and the keening of still-conscious beings undergoing excruciating pain and terror emanate from three treatment rooms that open off this rotunda. The air is cold and heavy with nervous tension overlaid with the stench of blood and the sharp, astringent odors of medicines. Several coldly efficient S'Kra direct the entire facility, dispensing minor first aid, directing people to treatment rooms and arranging supplies for the harried surgeons. You also see a spiral staircase, Treatment Room Two, Treatment Room Three and Treatment Room One.

464 Several cots and pallets await the sick and wounded. Cold white tile and chill stone floors make the environment clean but lacking in warmth. Even the cots are a bleached white. The only trace of color in the room is a thick spray of blood on the wall, each drop sparkling in the glaring light like a ruby. The sight is less than reassuring. You also see Healer Adept Onsuwayo and the dispensary.
